The Las Animas County Department of Human Services, in partnership with the South Central Council of Governments, has launched the Las Animas County Community Food Fund, a new initiative designed to help local households access supplemental food resources during times of financial strain.

The Community Food Fund is supported by both local organizations and generous individual contributors who share a commitment to addressing food insecurity within the community. While the program cannot match the full dollar amount of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, it provides a $50.00 food voucher per eligible household member, helping close gaps for families in need.

Residents who apply will work with county technicians to verify SNAP eligibility, which also determines eligibility for these temporary funds. This process helps ensure assistance is directed to households with demonstrated need. Once approved, eligible residents can use vouchers to purchase essential food items from participating locations.

“Our goal is to make sure no family in Las Animas County has to choose between paying bills and putting nutritious food on the table,” said program representatives. “This fund was created to support our neighbors when they need it most.”

How to Help: Donate to Support Local Families

The launch of this fund follows recent impacts from the federal government shutdown, which has resulted in the suspension of all SNAP benefits for the month of November 2025. This sudden gap affects more than 3,040 residents in Las Animas County—including children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities—and represents more than $547,000 in lost food purchasing power. To help mitigate increased food insecurity, local agencies are requesting monetary donations that will be used to provide grocery store vouchers to current SNAP recipients, applicants awaiting approval, and, if funds remain after SNAP benefits resume, individuals who do not qualify for SNAP but still need support. Every dollar donated helps ensure that families can access nutritious food during the holiday season and throughout the shutdown. Donations are tax-deductible, and receipts will be provided for tax purposes. Get more information on how to donate.

Community organizations and residents who wish to support the fund may connect with the County Department of Human Services for contribution opportunities.
